    As a world war rages in Europe in 1915, Ottoman
authorities commence on the eastern frontier of their empire,
the systematic slaughter of 1.5 million Armenians the first
genocide of the 20th century. A teenage boy named Kaspar
Hovannisian is one among a generation of Armenians who
survives the murder of their families and ancestral homeland,
and escape to new destinies in the United States. Kaspar
follows the American Dream to the San Joaquin Valley of
California, where he amasses an agricultural and real estate
empire. But memories of his homeland burn strong—a legacy
of love, sorrow, and faith in salvation.

Kim Theriault to Speak on

Arshile Gorky's Armenian Identity and Modern Art"

Dr. Kim S. Theriault will speak on
"
Arshile Gorky's Armenian Identity and Modern Art"
Monday, September 13, at 7:30pm
University Business Center, Peters Auditorium,
on the Fresno State campus.

In this lecture, Dr. Theriault addresses Gorky's specific experience by exploring
the foundations  for his actions. Her theory is that Gorky's art and his life becomes
a vehicle through which one  can examine the effects of trauma on the individual in such
a way as it facilitates the construction of a new life in America.
Kim Servart Theriault is  an Associate Professor of Art History, Theory, and Criticism at
Dominican University in River Forest, IL.

She completed her doctorate at the University of Virginia in 2000 with her dissertation
Re-Placing Arshile Gorky: Exile, Identity, and Abstraction in Twentieth-Century
American Art and has presented numerous lectures on the artist.

Dr. Theriault's lecture is sponsored by the Armenian Studies Program and the
Armenian General Benevolent Union, Fresno Chapter.

her Newly Released Genocide Trilogy

Dr. Rita Kuyumjian of Montreal, Quebec, Canada will present a lecture
Trilogy-April 24, 1915: Before and After—The Lives of the Survivors

Monday, September 20, 2010, 7:30pm
University Business Center, Alice Peters Auditorium, Rm. 191
on the Fresno State campus.

In her presentation, Dr. Kuyumjian will be speaking about her third
publication, Trilogy-April 24, 1915, a three-volume work that is
dedicated to the Armenian intellectuals who were arrested on
April 24, 1915 and to the 95th Anniversary of the Genocide.
The Trilogy is dedicated to the works and the lives of two Armenians,
Aram Andonian and Teotig, both survivors of the April 24 arrests.

The lecture is free and open to the public.
Relaxed parking will be available in the University Business
Center parking lot after 7:00 PM the night of the lecture.
